Also When he retired, he had the most wins as a T20I captain across the world, surpassing the likes of Eoin Morgan of Engliand and MS Dhoni of India.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asghar is a right-handed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Batting_(cricket)\">batsman<\/a>\u00a0and a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seam_bowling\">medium-fast<\/a> bowler. At first; In May 2015, he was named as the captain of Afghanistan for all formats, plus their inaugural\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Test_cricket\">Test match<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Afghan_cricket_team_in_India_in_2018\">against India<\/a>.\u00a0He made his Test debut, against India, on 14 June 2018,\u00a0On 2 August 2018, he changed his last name from Stanikzai to Afghan. In April 2019, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Afghanistan_Cricket_Board\">Afghanistan Cricket Board<\/a>\u00a0(ACB) dropped him as captain of the Afghanistan team across all three formats.\u00a0However, in December 2019, the ACB reappointed Asghar Afghan as the captain of the Afghanistan cricket team across all formats.\u00a0In March 2021, during the series\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zimbabwean_cricket_team_against_Afghanistan_in_the_UAE_in_2020%E2%80%9321\">against Zimbabwe<\/a>, Afghan played in his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_Afghanistan_Twenty20_International_cricket_records#Most_matches_as_captain\">50th T20I as Afghanistan&#8217;s captain<\/a>.\u00a0In May 2021, he was sacked as the national team captain. \u00a0In October 2021, ahead of Afghanistan&#8217;s match against\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Namibia_national_cricket_team\">Namibia<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2021_ICC_Men%27s_T20_World_Cup\">2021 ICC Men&#8217;s T20 World Cup<\/a>, Afghan announced his retirement from all forms of cricket following the game.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time of his captaincy he was the most successful T20I captain in the world by wining most matches as the captain and highest winning percentage of the wins as the captain (42 wins out of 52 matches) crossing Indian legend MS Dhoni as the captain. <strong>Early life<\/strong> Afghan was born in 1987 in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kabul\">Kabul<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Democratic_Republic_of_Afghanistan\">Afghanistan<\/a>. He was a refugee in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peshawar\">Peshawar<\/a>, Pakistan, where he started playing cricket along with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mohammad_Nabi\">Mohammad Nabi<\/a>, Nawroz Mangal, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shapoor_Zadran\">Shapoor Zadran<\/a>. <strong>Early career <\/strong>Afghan made his representative international debut for Afghanistan U-17s in the 2004 ACC Under-17 competition, where he played his debut match against the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Arab_Emirates_national_cricket_team\">United Arab Emirates Under-17s<\/a>. \u00a0His debut match for the senior squad came against\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oman_national_cricket_team\">Oman<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2004_ACC_Trophy\">2004 ACC Trophy<\/a>, as well as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2006_ACC_Trophy\">2006 ACC Trophy<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2007_ACC_Twenty20_Cup\">2007 ACC Twenty20 Cup<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afghan was a member of the Afghanistan side that, from 2008 to 2009, won the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_Cricket_League\">World Cricket League<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2008_ICC_World_Cricket_League_Division_Five\">Division Five<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2008_ICC_World_Cricket_League_Division_Four\">Division Four<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2009_ICC_World_Cricket_League_Division_Three\">Division Three<\/a>, earning them promotion to Division Two and allowing them to take part in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2009_ICC_World_Cup_Qualifier\">2009 ICC World Cup Qualifier<\/a>\u00a0where they gained\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/One_Day_International\">One Day International<\/a>\u00a0status. In the World Cup Qualifier, Afghan made his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List-A_cricket\">List-A<\/a>\u00a0debut, against\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bermuda_national_cricket_team\">Bermuda<\/a>and later in the tournament he made his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/One_Day_International\">One Day International<\/a>\u00a0debut against\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scotland_national_cricket_team\">Scotland<\/a>. \u00a0His\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First-class_cricket\">first-class<\/a>\u00a0debut came in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2009%E2%80%9310_ICC_Intercontinental_Cup\">Intercontinental Cup<\/a>\u00a0against a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zimbabwe_national_cricket_team\">Zimbabwe XI<\/a>\u00a0in a match that Afghanistan drew. Later, in November 2009 he was a member of Afghanistan&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2009_ACC_Twenty20_Cup\">2009 ACC Twenty20 Cup<\/a>\u00a0winning squad.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Rising career<\/strong> Afghan made his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Twenty20_International\">Twenty20 International<\/a>\u00a0debut against\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ireland_national_cricket_team\">Ireland<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2010_Quadrangular_Twenty20_Series_in_Sri_Lanka\">2010 Quadrangular Twenty20 Series in Sri Lanka<\/a>.\u00a0Later on in February 2010, Afghan played a single match in Afghanistan&#8217;s victorious\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2010_ICC_World_Twenty20_Qualifier\">2010 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier<\/a>, playing in the final against Ireland. Afghan was later named in Afghanistan&#8217;s squad for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2010_ICC_World_Twenty20\">2010 ICC World Twenty20<\/a>. In April 2010, Afghan was a key member of Afghanistan&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2010_ACC_Trophy_Elite\">2010 ACC Trophy Elite<\/a> winning squad which defeated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nepal_national_cricket_team\">Nepal<\/a>\u00a0in the final. Afghan ended the tournament as the third leading run scorer with 253 runs, including a score of 151 runs from 83\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Delivery_(cricket)\">balls<\/a>\u00a0against\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bhutan_national_cricket_team\">Bhutan<\/a>. On 1 March 2014, Afghan&#8217;s 90* helped\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Afghanistan_national_cricket_team\">Afghanistan<\/a>\u00a0win against\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bangladesh_national_cricket_team\">Bangladesh<\/a> which was their first win against a Test-playing nation. He and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Samiullah_Shenwari\">Samiullah Shenwari<\/a> put on a 164 runs partnership for the sixth wicket which is the fifth highest Partnership for the sixth wicket in the history of ODIs and the third highest ODI Partnership for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Afghanistan_national_cricket_team\">Afghanistan<\/a>. In February 2018, he had his appendix removed, therefore missing the start of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2018_Cricket_World_Cup_Qualifier\">2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier<\/a>\u00a0tournament. In September 2018, he was named in Kandahar&#8217;s squad in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2018%E2%80%9319_Afghanistan_Premier_League\">first edition<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Afghanistan_Premier_League\">Afghanistan Premier League<\/a>\u00a0tournament.\u00a0He was the leading run-scorer for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kandahar_Knights\">Kandahar Knights<\/a>\u00a0in the tournament, with 264 runs in eight matches In April 2019, he was named in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2019_Cricket_World_Cup_squads#Afghanistan\">Afghanistan&#8217;s squad<\/a>\u00a0for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2019_Cricket_World_Cup\">2019 Cricket World Cup<\/a>.\u00a0The following month, in the ODI series\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Afghan_cricket_team_in_Scotland_in_2019\">against Scotland<\/a>, he became the second cricketer for Afghanistan to play in 100 ODI matches.
